Inspiration

Food waste is a global crisis—1.3 billion tons of food are wasted annually, while millions suffer from hunger. Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2 & 12), we aimed to build a system that bridges the gap between food surplus and those in need.

What it does

Our Food Rescue Management System connects food donors with charities to ensure that surplus food is efficiently redistributed. Additionally, we integrated a recommendation system that suggests nearby available food to charities, optimizing food distribution.

How we built it

We developed the system using:

  • Django REST API for a scalable backend
  • React for a seamless and user-friendly frontend
  • Machine Learning for food proximity recommendations
    Collaboration was key! Our team, formed through PWIC, despite not knowing each other before, we adapted, learned, and delivered.

Challenges we ran into

  • Learning new tech: Many of us were new to Django and React, making the learning curve steep.
  • Time constraints: Juggling full-time jobs while working on this project was tough.
  • Collaboration: Coordinating with a new team remotely required strong communication and teamwork.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Built a functional, full-stack platform from scratch
  2. Successfully learned & applied Django and React in a real-world project
  3. Overcame teamwork and time management challenges
  4. Created an AI-powered recommendation system to optimize food redistribution

What we learned

What's next for Food Rescue Management

  1. Adding More functionalities to make it all in one solution
  2. Scaling the platform to reach more communities globally
  3. Enhancing the ML model for better food distribution optimization
  4. Partnering with NGOs and food businesses to reduce waste on a larger scale

We believe technology + collaboration can drive sustainable change, and this project is just the beginning!
