Inspiration: I expressed interest in this idea after the topic was announced. I brainstormed ideas and came up with this. This app can make a genuine impact to its community.
What it does: My app allows people that are hard of vision to tell what they are eating before they eat it. Many times, they rely on another human to tell them what to eat.
How we built it: The app is built on SwiftUI. SwiftUI makes it very simple to use system objects, such as the image picker and text to speech service.
Challenges we ran into: Making the API call was extremely difficult. The API I used made it extremely difficult to parse the incoming information, and it was difficult to upload my file to AWS S3 programmatically.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: I am proud of making a functioning app during the time of this hackathon.
What we learned: I learned a lot of SwiftUI skills, it also ignited further interest in mobile app development.
What's next for Food Recognition for the Blind: I am not planning on abandoning my project anytime soon. I am hoping to polish the user interface and make it extremely easy to navigate, since the app should be accessible to everyone. I also want to properly give the ingredients list in a way that is formatted nicely and enable text to speech, so that people who are hard of vision can use the app.
