Inspiration
Food is something we interact with every day—but most nutrition apps feel boring, strict, or overwhelming. We wanted to flip the script and make eating fun, magical, and rewarding. Inspired by Ghibli-style charm and classic monster-collecting games, Food Leveling turns your real-world meals into tiny micropets, stat boosts, and epic boss battles. It’s health gamification with heart.
What it does
Food Leveling scans any food—either text or image—and identifies which macros it contains. Each macro instantly transforms into in-game stats and summons adorable micro-pets like Proteon, Carbi, Fiberling, and Fatling. Players use these buffs and pets to battle whimsical food-themed bosses such as Evil Cheese, Heart Attack, and Fast-Food Chimera. Every meal becomes a chance to grow stronger.
How we built it
We built a custom logic engine using a simplified nutrition-to-stats system called the Ghibli Scale. The system translates real food into game stats and micropets in a fun, narrative format.
The app integrates:
- Vision + LLM for food identification
- A stat-mapping engine for real-to-game conversion
- JSON-structured responses for gameplay consistency
- A Ghibli-inspired narrative layer that turns every scan into an adventure
The frontend displays the player’s stats, pets, and boss battles as they progress.
Challenges we ran into
- Making nutrition simple enough for gameplay while still feeling meaningful
- Ensuring consistent JSON outputs from the LLM
- Designing a balance system so players can’t break the game with a single meal
- Creating boss personalities and attacks that feel fun, not scary
- Fine-tuning the tone to stay cute and magical across all scenarios
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A fully functional “scan → stats → summon → battle” pipeline
- A unique narrative mechanic where your meal literally shapes your adventure
- A simplified nutrition system that feels rewarding instead of punishing
- The creation of four memorable micro-pets with distinct personalities
- Boss concepts that blend humor, health awareness, and creativity
What we learned
- How to integrate real-world data into a gamified fantasy loop
- Techniques for making LLM outputs stable, structured, and game-safe
- How narrative design can transform health tasks into joyful interactions
- The importance of balancing “fun” with “educational value” in a kid-friendly way
What's next for Food Leveling
- Adding more micropets and evolutions
- Creating seasonal bosses and weekly challenges
- Building a multiplayer “Arena Mode” where teams of micro-pets face off
- Expanding food detection accuracy
- Introducing quests, cooking challenges, and diet streak bonuses
- Partnering with health or education platforms to gamify good habits
