Inspiration
We were talking about potential ideas, and hobbies came up. One of our members enjoyed watching food videos online, and another enjoyed cooking. Because of that we thought of some kind of melding interests, initially being about being able to go straight to buying ingredients from food videos evolved into a broader food assisting service.
What it does
It acts essentially as a questionnaire that asks the user a number of questions; with the foremost being whether they want to eat out, eat in at home, cook at home, or as an extra feature that calls back to our inspiration, will point you to food videos based on your choices. There were a number of other potential features planned but were unable to be implemented because of time and our skill level.
How I built it
Our team of four split up to take on different tasks. One to deal with the design elements of the app as a website, another to design it as if it were on mobile and program some web functionality with HTML and CSS. One pitched the idea, fleshed out the concepts, and critique the time while another made a solid demonstration of how it may run.
Challenges I ran into
Figuring out how to differentiate ourselves from related applications like Yelp was one such problem. Another was figuring out how we wanted to design the application for desktop and mobile. There was difficulty programming how the app might function. In the end we overcame these problems to the best of our ability.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Being able to bring a concept into something somewhat tangible within 12 hours for some first time hackers was one. The kind words of others mentors was gratifying and motivating as well. Being able to accomplish anything at all within the given time frame is what we can take pride in the most.
What I learned
Knowing the weakest points when designing, programming, pitching, and more gave us a sense of what to improve and work on to do better in future projects.
What's next for Food Hunter
We'll certainly all go our separate ways, but as some of us are first time hackers we might encounter each other in other places. As it stands now, our idea is a little too ambitious for our skill sets are they are now. The idea could be reused by any of us in the future if any of us go to other hackathons.
