In November last year, my family hosted an event for all of our relatives and family friends. We hired cooks to prepare lunch and dinner. However, not all of them showed up, and a lot of the food was wasted. I felt really bad about this, and wanted to figure out a way to prevent wastage of food. I knew that it was practically not possible to prepare the perfect amount of food for the people. But there must be a way to influence how this excess food is managed. This incident inspired me to build this app, which manages excess food wisely.

There are many restaurants in my area which have a lot of excess food. I enquired at a few restaurants in my locality, and found out that this excess food is just thrown away. Instead, the best way to use this excess food would've been to give it to the needy people and organisations. That is exactly where my app comes in. It helps restaurants effortlessly connect with local charities to donate to them the extra food.

Using Swift and Firebase, I made an easy-to-use excess waste donation application. The restaurants just post a donation, with all details regarding the excess food, which will be seen by all local charities. These charities can then accept that donation. Once accepted, the restaurant then delivers it to the organisation. This process is made easy through live status updates to both the restaurant and the charity, and easily accessible contact information.

The biggest problem I faced was integrating the database with the front-end. Creating, updating, and deleting data all while listening for changes made it a little more challenging.

I plan to implement this app in my area. First, I need to add few more features like improved security and live location tracking. I also plan to add another account type, which is the volunteer. The volunteer will deliver the food from the restaurant to the charity, instead of the restaurant handling all the deliveries.
