Inspiration
We were inspired to create a project based on food waste as some members take part in organisations that are based in environmental sectors, and as these organisations deal with making the world a cleaner place we felt that food waste was a topic that would help reduce households throwing away goods which have expired and ending up in landfills to be filled. Our project aims to try and reduce household waste in order to help humanities wastage problem.
What it does
The project we have created is designed to track stored goods and alert users to their expiration dates. The project helps by also helping them know where to properly store their goods (fridge, pantry, table) and monitors fridge temperature.
How we built it
We firstly built it by designing the prototype using Figma, and then decided to develop a website with html, css, and javascript. Even though we have created a website, this website can be later built to be used in smart fridge panels, or even a mobile app.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were debugging code that managed to output our desired need.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to connect and convert our ideas into a responsive website within a short period of time is a great experience, as not only we are able to enhance our technical skills but also learn how to work as a team effectively. We are new to the tech field, and it is a great opportunity just by joining UNIHACK since it is the first time for all of us.
What we learned
We learned a lot about time management and how to divide our tasks properly in order to be able to start progress on our project. We also learned how to adopt to certain problems as well.
What's next for Food Hackie
Next for Food Hackie is to be able to implement more to it so that it can have even more unique features into it that can make it even more appealing. Some unique features will include tracking the storage space, integrating with multiple users, and recommending the estimated amount of food to be bought. Another step would be being able to partner up with market companies such as Coles or Woolies in order to integrate these functionalities from our app to their app as well. As long as people are able to save their money while reducing food waste, by using our app, it would already be a step forward for us in order to innovate even more in the future.
