Inspiration
A lot of food banks are running low on supplies to give away, and when they receive supplies, they usually get supplies they already have or don't need at the moment! At the same time, everyone, especially Black communities, are struggling with meeting their needs, and go to food banks for help with getting food. The current system is struggling to keep up with demand.
What it does
Food For You is a way for people to connect with food banks and their needs. In addition, people can also go to Food For You and find information on their local food banks, as well as see how much food they have left. You can donate items that food banks need to them through the Donate page. However, you may only donate items they have asked for. This way, food banks can keep their inventories efficient, and be able to hold more of what people need.
How I built it
I built the coded model with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I also made a styled version in Canva.
Challenges I ran into
For some reason, the HTML and CSS code was buggy and styling was being applied in wrong places or in small amounts, so I had to make another model in Canva to show how the website would look if it was styled.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud that I made both of these models in 3 hours, as I only had that much time to make this project.
What I learned
I learned a lot about discrimination and how it sets the Black community back. That's one of the main reasons I created this project - to put food bank information at people's fingertips.
What's next for Food For You
I want to style the website better, add in mobile support, and also add more functionality to the Locations Near You and Donate pages. I can also add in an interactive map showing locations of food banks registered with Food For You.
