Inspiration
Food insecurity is a topic that has been gaining momentum and we have heard about the increased difficulties that many students have been going through as a result of inflation. We strongly believe that food is a basic necessity and that we would really like to reduce the challenges that one may go through if they need access to a food bank. Keeping the three pillars of inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility in mind, we thought that food for all would be a great platform in reducing the barrier to food bank access and to make it easier for people to discover food banks that can serve their needs.
What it does
Food for all is a website that provides a personalized experience to users by taking into account their social conditions, dietary restrictions, and location to provide real-time data of food bank hours, amount of food available at each location, whether dietary restrictions can be catered to, and any additional eligibility requirements, all in one simple interface. We hope to make the experience of accessing food bank services less stressful and more inclusive for diverse populations with different nutritional needs.
How we built it
We first produced our little food characters on procreate, then we used figma to design our website. We tried to make the user interface as simple as possible and kept a consistent colour scheme and theme to improve user experience.
Challenges we ran into
As we are all first time coders, we attempted really hard to create a webpage but unfortunately, we were unable to go very far. We have our HTML page linked but it is a work in progress…
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we managed to learn how to use figma in the span of 1.5 days and that we were able to come up with an idea that is very meaningful to us. We persevered and tried our hardest to apply the skills that we have learnt on learn day to code and we managed to create a website (although it is no where near complete).
What we learned
We learnt basic figma skills, coding skills, html design and also gained some insight into what goes into building a program.
What's next for food for all!
We would love to improve our coding and try to continue working on this project, but we can also recruit the help of our very capable cpsc friends and hopefully bring this idea to life. Food insecurity is an issue that is increasingly relevant and quite near and dear to us so we are glad that we were able to flesh out this idea and come up with a design for a site!
