Inspiration

Hello, we are Samihah tahsin, Cheng Wang, Bhavesh Joshi, and Nicolas Ortuno! Combined, we are the Food For All Team. #CombatFoodInsecurity

When discussing which track to choose, we thought of how as a city, we waste a lot of food because of overproduction and underconsumption. New York City restaurants, in total, account for the largest single stream of food waste on the commercial side. They generate close to a half-million tons of food waste per year – enough to fill well over a hundred subway cars per day. As a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, getting access to food has become harder for a lot of people. In addition, about 3.9 million tons of food in New York State end up in landfills. By working closely with individuals and businesses who want to donate their food, we will help to both reduce the amount of leftover food thrown away and make it easier for people who are struggling with finding food to find it. To keep up with this food waste, Food For All is an application that directs users to locations giving away food to those who need it. In addition, users can give away their access to food to avoid waste.

What it does

As the name suggests Food For All, our application is helping everyone to reduce food insecurity. Food For All is an initiative that uses technology to connect people with nearby Food Pantries and communal fridges, as well as with restaurants and individuals, who do not want their food to go to waste. Members of the community can upload images of the fridge to show what is available.

For those looking to pick up free food, the addresses direct the user to a map (Google Maps) with directions to the location. When clicked on, contact info that includes social media redirects the user to the social media page of that location. Making sure that the food is safe for consumption. Moderating the food that is being distributed is important for the health of anyone consuming the food. Food for all is connected with already-established food distributing locations. In addition to that, users can go through a checklist in the app to see if anything they have is eligible to donate. We include all of the contact details of the location so the user can double-check with the location to make a safe donation.

There is also a delivery option that allows the user to get in contact with locations that do not have staff to deliver to the disabled or elderly. Having this feature ensures safer food distribution for those who cannot pick up food by themselves.

How we built it

Our team used Figma to design and run the prototype for Food For All. The attractive circle logos were made on Canva.

Challenges we ran into

Participating in a remote hackathon while on a team was wonderful but not seamless. At times communication was an issue as not everyone is available to talk at the same time or check messages at the speed of light. Most of the team never used Figma before, getting used to the controls and making edits on seemingly completed pages was quite difficult.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a group of Figma noobs, we are proud of being able to create a prototype with no coding. We all have experience in backend programming and are used to running programs with less visual appeal. Creating Food For All with backend programming in mind worked out well for us as we were able to include the main features we wanted within a day.

What we learned

By working as a team, we were able to improve UI/UX skills among our team. Also, we realized how teamwork can achieve a big task in a short amount of time from valuable contribution from each of us.

What's next for Food For All.

An actual app of course! The Food For All Team enjoyed developing ideas and creating together during WaffleHacks. Food For All has a lot of potentials to become a real-life tool to improve food insecurity in New York and possibly other areas as well. Some features we would like to add would be a three-part system, one for people who want to pick up food, one for established food distribution locations, and one for those who are interested in delivering. Partnering with schools to encourage volunteering and give students volunteering credits is also something we would like to implement.
