Inspiration

We were inspired by the State Farm "Be a good neighbor" challenge, as well as witnessing issues like food insecurity in our own community. We wanted to make an application that would help people with access to food and other resources.

What it does

The website allows users to access a network of local food banks and details about them like location, hours, and the quantity of food. It also provides owners/managers of food banks to register their organization and make it accessible to a wider audience.

How we built it

We split our group in half, with one team focusing on the frontend and the other team on the backend. We laid the groundwork down by starting with the frontend development and the shifting focus to the backend, with supplemental additions to the frontend when necessary.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge that we ran into was figuring out how to set up the database and how to organize the information for users. To solve this, we slowed down and drew out a diagram to represent the database structure and make it the most efficient and effective.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One accomplishment that we are proud of is the inclusion of the live map on the search page and profile pages that show where the food banks are located.

What we learned

We learned a lot about teamwork, collaboration, and gained a deeper understanding of both frontend and backend development.

What's next for Food Finder

An idea for expansion was to incorporate more services like homeless shelters or other places where those in need can get help.
