My Journey in Building a Food-Finding App
🎯 Inspiration
The idea for this food-finding app came from my own struggles in finding good places to eat, especially when traveling or trying new cuisines. I wanted to create an app that provides personalized recommendations, real-time availability, and seamless navigation.
📚 What I Learned
While building this project, I gained experience in:
- User Experience (UX) Design: Understanding how users interact with food discovery apps.
- Backend Development: Working with APIs for restaurant data, maps, and user preferences.
- Frontend Development: Designing a clean, intuitive interface for easy navigation.
- Database Management: Storing and retrieving restaurant data efficiently.
🛠How I Built It
I structured the app using the following technologies:
- Frontend: React Native for cross-platform support.
- Backend: Node.js with Express for handling API requests.
- Database: Firebase for real-time data storage and authentication.
- APIs Used: Google Places API for restaurant data, Mapbox for navigation.
Key Features:
✅ Location-based restaurant discovery
✅ Filters for cuisine, price, and ratings
✅ User reviews and favorites
✅ Integration with Google Maps for directions
🚧 Challenges Faced
- Data Accuracy & Freshness – Ensuring restaurant details were always up-to-date.
- Performance Optimization – Handling API rate limits and caching results.
- UI/UX Design – Creating an intuitive interface while displaying rich data.
- Cross-Platform Compatibility – Ensuring smooth performance on both iOS and Android.
🚀 Conclusion
Building this food-finding app was an incredible learning experience. It reinforced my skills in full-stack development and gave me insight into real-world challenges like API integration and user experience design. In the future, I plan to enhance it with AI-powered recommendations and offline support.
