Inspiration

For our creation, we decided to approach the problem statement from the lenses of food distribution optimization and data-driven decisions. The topics that particularly stuck with us were:

  • Firstly, each kid, whether they are four or fourteen, get the same package, even though kids in that age range vary drastically in terms of their size and nutritional requirements.
  • Secondly, the fact that packages are taken home by kids from school so they need to fit in backpacks and not be too heavy to carry.

What it does

So our product is an online application interface for staff or long-term volunteers at Food4Kids to create food packages that are tailored to three different age ranges, each one having a halal and non-halal version, so six in total, while ensuring that the packages are of appropriate weight (we don’t want a child luging home six cans).

How we built it

For the design process, we wanted to create our product to be as minimalistic and user-friendly as possible so it doesn’t require much technical skills at all. We created our prototype using Figma.

Challenges we ran into

We dove straight into making the UI without fully hashing out all the details of what our project was going to look and how it was going to function. This ended up causing us to need to backtrack and re-evaluate the project, and then thinking about how the UI was going to reflect our new plan. This caused time to be wasted on a plan that ended up not being used when we were already on a time crunch. To solve this issue and make sure it would not happen again, we made sure to fully communicate to each other a decide what direction we wanted to project to go towards. We learned to always flush out the feasibility of our design plans and communicate to each other what is possible within our own skill limits.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the Figma prototype we created.

What we learned

We learned how to create a prototype using Figma, work effectively as a team and work under pressure.

What's next for Food Fairies

The future plans for this application would be to collect data on which foods were in demand for a specific day to develop a database where permanent staff can locate trends. We want to create a way for the company to check the history of what they have given out. We will also link to existing databases and create an inventory of current supplies.
