Inspiration
In many parts of the world, food is not distributed effectively, leading to significant food waste. Even when individuals or organizations intend to donate food, they often face challenges in finding appropriate recipients. Our goal is to try and end hunger, with an app which connects the donor and recipients together. Food Waste Reduction App: Empower-Wave and here are some of the features:
User Registration and Profiles: Restaurants, grocery stores, and individuals can sign up for accounts. Profiles include information such as location, type of surplus food available, and preferred donation recipients.
Surplus Food Listings: Users can create listings for surplus food items they wish to donate. Listings include details such as type of food, quantity, expiry date (if applicable), and pickup location.
Search and Matchmaking: Organisations or individuals in need can search for surplus food listings in their area. The app matches surplus food listings with nearby organisations or individuals in need based on location and food preferences.(SNAPnSave)
Notification and Alerts: Users receive real-time notifications and alerts about new surplus food listings or matches in their area. Notifications can be customised based on user preferences and dietary restrictions.
Communication and Coordination: Users can communicate with each other through in-app messaging to coordinate food donations and pickups. Chat functionality facilitates communication between donors and recipients to arrange logistics and timing. Have a call option where both ends can communicate for an exchange of goods.
Scheduling and Logistics: Users can schedule pickups or deliveries of surplus food donations directly through the app. The app provides tools for managing logistics, such as setting pickup times, confirming deliveries, and tracking food donations.
Feedback and Ratings: Users can rate and review each other based on their donation experiences. Ratings and reviews help build trust and credibility within the community and encourage responsible food donation practices. (Needed to know if the App is being effective)
Analytics and Reporting: The app provides analytics and reporting features to track food donation activity, measure impact, and identify trends. Users can generate reports on their donation history, including the types and quantities of food donated and the recipients served.( for every recycle, donation or any receiving the users should get points)
Resource Center and Integration with Food Banks and Charities: The app includes a resource centre with information and resources on food donation best practices, food safety guidelines, and local food assistance programs. The app can integrate with existing food banks and charities to streamline the distribution of surplus food donations and reach a wider network of beneficiaries.
What it does:
Empower-Wave is a platform which connects donor with a recipients in need , with the mission of bridging the gap between surplus food and those who require it.
How we built it:
It involved several key technologies and steps:
1. Frontend Development: We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the user interface (UI) and design elements of the web application. This includes the layout, navigation menus, and interactive features for users to upload images and navigate through the platform.
2. Backend Development: The backend of Empower-wave is powered by Flask, a Python web framework. Flask handles the server-side logic, restapi, and react. We used MongoDB as our database to store user data, uploaded images, and marketplace listings.
3. Marketplace Functionality: We implemented features to allow donors to add their food item to the marketplace. This involved creating forms for users to input product details, images, and other relevant information. MongoDB was utilized to store and manage marketplace listings.
Challenges we ran into:
The most difficult part about this project was front-end design as we are not good with frontend development and the power cuts was also great effect . At the same time, we also have some language communication barriers, but the team has a patient environment and we cooperate happily
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
Despite facing challenges such as team member changes and mid-project departures, the remaining team members persevered through language barriers, physical exhaustion, and limited knowledge accumulation. Within the short time-frame of 24 hours, they successfully completed the project. Additionally, despite having an incomplete technology stack, the team demonstrated remarkable adaptability and willingness to learn and apply new skills.
What we learned:
That we were able to build an app which is going to help with the crisis of hunger, creating a user-friendly app for repurposed goods, and fostering an engaged community of sustainability enthusiasts. Its intuitive user interface enhances user experience, while robust scalability and performance ensure reliability even under heavy usage. The platform's positive user feedback reflects its impact in promoting creativity, sustainability, and a circular economy. We proud of how we able to contribute something we believe will be a solution and make a great impact.
What's next for EMPOWER-WAVE?
Building on strong connections to achieve even greater impact, we are excited to announce plans for expanded collaboration beyond our current focus on food. Drawing on our expertise and leveraging our established partnerships, we will venture into new areas such as apparel and water resource management, ensuring that our positive impact extends to a wider range of essential needs.
