Inspiration

We noticed that many teenagers and young adults struggle with unhealthy eating habits and lack awareness about nutrition. At the same time, games remain one of the most engaging ways to influence positive behavior. So we were inspired to combine both — turning nutrition learning into a playful, interactive experience that feels fun instead of stressful.

What it does

Food Defense is a cute tower-defense game where players level up their characters by learning about healthy food. Users take a photo of their meal, and Gemini analyzes the nutrition. The healthier the meal, the stronger the characters become. Players then use these upgraded food-based heroes to defend against enemies and defeat bosses in the game.

How we built it

We designed a cozy, pastel art style for all characters and animations. We integrated the Gemini API to analyze food images and generate nutrition scores. These scores are then converted into in-game character stats. We built the core gameplay flow, character system, and scanning mechanism while ensuring the experience remains educational and fun at the same time.

Challenges we ran into

We faced difficulty balancing the nutrition scoring with game mechanics, ensuring fairness while keeping it fun. Another major challenge was integrating the AI analysis smoothly into the game so that players don’t feel interrupted. Designing consistent, high-quality character art and animations for multiple food-themed heroes also took significant iteration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we created a game that not only entertains but also promotes healthier eating habits. We successfully integrated AI food scanning, developed unique characters, and built a cohesive visual style that feels warm, friendly, and memorable.

What we learned

We learned how to use AI tools like Gemini for real-world food analysis, how to balance gameplay progression with educational goals, and how important it is to keep user experience smooth when mixing AI and game mechanics. We also deepened our skills in design, teamwork, and rapid prototyping.

What's next for Food Defense

We plan to expand the number of characters, introduce more enemy types, and refine the nutrition scoring to be even more accurate. We also aim to add multiplayer features, seasonal events, and personalized healthy-habit challenges to encourage long-term engagement and learning.
