Inspiration

Food waste is a problem that many know about but not much action has been taken on the more commercial side of the food cycle. A lot of the food still ends up in the landfill, even if the food is still completely edible and if not could be utilized for better purposes. This can be from making food scraps for animals to composting almost 90% or more of organic waste in consumer-facing organizations. We want to create a way to motivate this type of development.

What it does

Helps more commercial side of the food cycle to take more actionable steps towards disposing of extra goods to simplify compost pick services. This is an app that makes it easier for people to list and request services from other organizations.

How we built it

Utilized Figma for structuring the overall layout of the user interface for the restaurant end of the experience. An attempt was made to utilize reach native to create a simple version for iOs devices.

Challenges we ran into

Coding our solution with only 1 coder really limited our expectation of what we can realistically show during the hackathon. Our understanding of the problem shifted as we dived deeper into it and talked to other people.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Improved our design skillset and made it an easier way for the future if we plan on continuing this project. Our coder learned more about react-native and its implementation. We are proud that we simplified our idea to the bare bone of what the customer cares about.

What we learned

Presenting over a short time period is a lot harder than it seems. Being concise and only stating what is truly important needs practice and a deep understanding of the problem. There are a lot of ways to make the app and ways to be efficient to make our product.

What's next for Food Chain

Outreach to more restaurant owners/managers to understand their current processes regarding organic waste disposal beyond. Improve the user interface and include the backend of our current product.
