Inspiration
We realized that a lot of people had been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and had trouble finding resources for basic necessities. That's why we created the Food Bank Locator to help people find food banks near them.
What it does
The project is a web page where people can enter their zip code and then the page connects to two APIs to retrieve food banks closest to them. We also created a Discord Bot that provides facts and info on local county food banks.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, JS (Axios) for front-end development for the web pages and Python for the bot.
Challenges we ran into
We had some trouble processing the output we were getting but we worked out the challenges by debugging and trying new things. We also had trouble getting the bot up and running so we had to choose the right functionality and libraries.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are glad to say that we learned how to use different APIs and how to program a discord bot. This is something we've never done before!
What we learned
We learned that we should plan ahead of schedule in order to use the limited time constraints wisely. We also learned a lot on the usage of APIs, using python with discord, learned a lot from the workshops in the hackathon.
What's next for Food Bank Locator
With the food bank locator, we plan allow ways for the user to contact food banks and maybe also include charities with the website. We also want to integrate with Google Maps and provide a way for people to contact the food bank directly.
