Inspiration

The idea for Food 4 Friends was born during a cozy potluck night with our friend group. As we passed dishes and swapped stories, we realized how much joy came from sharing not just food, but the stories and creativity behind each recipe. Yet, we lacked a centralized, fun, and interactive way to do it—especially something built for our vibe. With the launch of bolt.new, we finally had the perfect chance to bring this vision to life and turn our casual idea into a real product.

What it does

Food 4 Friends is a social recipe-sharing web app that helps friend groups, communities, and food lovers connect over their passion for cooking. Users can:

  • Create, publish, and save recipes
  • Like and share dishes they love
  • Join discussions around trending ingredients or recipe requests
  • Chat with Chef Remy, our AI sous-chef who can suggest recipes, offer substitutions, or walk you through how to make that perfect pasta

Think of it like a blend of a digital recipe book, a foodie forum, and a helpful kitchen companion—all in one space.

How we built it

Our team of 3 built Food 4 Friends on bolt.new, which made rapid development incredibly smooth and collaborative. Our tech stack includes:

  • React with TypeScript for a snappy, modern UI
  • TanStack (Query & Router) to handle efficient data fetching and routing
  • Tailwind CSS for sleek, responsive styling
  • Supabase for our backend, including authentication, storage, and real-time features
  • ElevenLabs Conversational AI Agents to power our AI assistant, Chef Remy

The modular, component-driven architecture made it easy to build and iterate quickly, while bolt.new helped us work synchronously and stay in flow.

Challenges we ran into

Like any hackathon, we hit a few bumps along the way, and some challenges include:

  • Environment setup woes: One team member kept running into persistent GitHub authorization errors that delayed their local setup.
  • Feature creep: We had so many ideas (ingredient scanner? meal planner? local price data storage?) and had to make tough calls to focus on a solid MVP. -Learning curve: We had to learn to improve our prompts for development. Bolt.new provides useful buttons and tools to help with that. We especially love the discussion button to see how it'll implement our requests.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a full-stack social cooking platform
  • Chef Remy understands cooking terms and dietary preferences surprisingly well
  • Intuitive, clean UI that users instantly connect with
  • Got every team member involved in shipping real features

What we learned

  • Real-time dev tools like bolt.new can significantly boost productivity and team synergy
  • Prompt engineering isn't easy—it takes iteration to make AI truly useful
  • Tailwind + React + Supabase is a dream stack for building quickly
  • Food is a universal connector—even in code

What's next for Food 4 Friends

We’re just getting started. Here's what’s coming next:

  • Ingredient scanning with OCR to auto-suggest recipes from fridge contents
  • Recipe playlists (e.g. "Vegan Week", "Comfort Food", "Spicy Nights") curated by users and Chef Remy
  • Smart grocery lists auto-generated from saved recipes
  • Website integration with Chef Remy to share links to recipes

Food 4 Friends is more than a recipe app—it’s a platform for sharing culture, creativity, and community through the joy of food. We can't wait to keep cooking up new features.
