Inspiration
The concept of Foldly was driven by two unique stories that were related to the art of origami.
First, we were inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki. Her paper cranes became a universal symbol of hope, peace, resilience, and perseverance. Her story reminds us that even a single sheet of paper can inspire courage, healing, and meaningful change—an idea that lies at the heart of Foldly
Secondly, origami has become an inspiration for many engineers and designers, because it can affect not only art, but also modern technology. Principles of origami are now widely applied in designing deployable satellite solar panels, space structures, medical devices, robotics and engineering solutions.
What it does
Foldly is an interactive origami learning game where players complete paper models through step-by-step folding instruction. Search for and unlock origami models.
- Choose different paper styles.
- Follow guided folding instructions.
- Perform each fold interactively.
- Earn points and build a daily folding streak.
- Grow their personal origami collection.
There are no leaderboards or time pressure—just you, your collection, and your streak, making Foldly a calm and rewarding way to learn the art of origami at your own pace.
How we built it
We built Foldly using:
- Phaser 3 for the game engine and scene management.
- TypeScript for the game logic.
- Frame-by-frame animations to demonstrate each folding step with smooth visual transitions.
- A responsive UI for all game screens.
- A simple progression system with paper selection, points, and daily streaks.
Challenges we ran into
Understanding the correct sequence of origami folds. Each model had to be researched carefully so that every step looked natural and could be followed easily by players. As backend developers with no prior game development experience, there was a learning curve. It was also our first time using Phaser, but its documentation helped us get up to speed quickly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building and completing our first game. As backend developers with no prior game development experience, we're proud that we stayed committed, kept learning, and turned our idea into a working project.
What we learned
We Learned the fundamentals of game development with Phaser and how to design a scalable game architecture. We explored building and sharing games on Reddit and learned how Devvit simplifies game development and publishing.
What's next for Foldly
Foldly will feature more origami models with different difficulty levels, a Free Fold mode where players can create their own origami, the ability to gift completed creations to other users, and a public gallery for showcasing individual creations. It will also introduce special challenges, such as folding five paper cranes to unlock a personal inspirational message.
