Inspiration

FocusTrack was born out of a deeply familiar tension in modern work: employees are often expected to manage upward — keeping their managers informed, proving their value, and documenting contributions, all while doing the actual work. This creates an invisible emotional and mental load. FocusTrack is designed to offload that burden by helping employees plan, track, and reflect on their workday, while automatically surfacing those contributions to managers in meaningful ways. It fosters visibility without self-promotion, recognition without micromanagement, and clarity without overwork.

What it does

FocusTrack is an AI-powered productivity assistant that helps employees stay focused and managers stay informed.

For employees, it offers:

  • AI Daily Planning: Enter 2–4 focus tasks and let the AI generate a smart, structured plan for the day.
  • Smart Task Breakdown: Break down complex projects into clear subtasks, with risk indicators and dependencies.
  • End-of-Day Summaries: Reflect on your day naturally — the AI will format and surface it meaningfully for visibility.

For managers, it includes:

  • Team Dashboard: See progress, blockers, and activity at a glance — no check-ins needed.
  • AI Team Insights: Automatically identifies patterns (e.g., falling behind, high performance, recurring blockers).
  • Spotlight Mode (future feature): Allows managers to highlight and recognize standout contributions from team members, giving visibility to above-and-beyond work that might otherwise be missed.

How we built it

We used Bolt.new to rapidly prototype the app interface, authentication flows, and multi-role dashboards. The app logic was built with conditionals for employee vs. manager views, and we used AI functions to generate day plans and end-of-day summaries. Thoughtful UX structure was layered in to keep the experience calm and focused.

We used a combination of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to help us write, refine, and iterate on prompts, feature ideas, user flows, and copy. Each model brought a unique perspective — from UX clarity to technical logic — allowing us to rapidly prototype and problem-solve across disciplines.

Challenges we ran into

  • Setting up the login and account creation buttons to work properly in Bolt's system.
  • Creating a manager dashboard that surfaces insights without becoming too data-heavy or overwhelming.
  • Designing an onboarding flow that feels energizing and motivating rather than corporate or cold.
  • One big challenge was designing for natural reflection. We didn’t want employees to feel like they were filling out a status report — the goal was to keep the end-of-day summary feeling lightweight, intuitive, and authentic.
  • Building role-based logic for employee vs. manager views in Bolt required careful navigation handling and UI decisions.
  • Collaborating across multiple AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) sometimes introduced overlap or divergent suggestions — it took time to align their strengths into one clear direction.
  • We also wanted to ensure the app functioned as a landing page first — prioritizing user onboarding and capturing marketing leads at the beginning of the workflow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created a space where employees feel seen without overexplaining themselves
  • Seamlessly simulated AI logic in a way that feels genuinely helpful
  • Maintained a super clean, responsive, and modern UI throughout
  • Designed tailored roles for employees vs. managers — each with distinct value

What we learned

We learned that designing for visibility without micromanagement requires subtle UX decisions. Employees want clarity and recognition, but not more admin. Managers want insights, not dashboards full of noise. Getting this balance right takes iteration, empathy, and simplifying wherever possible.

We learned how to co-create with multiple AI tools — using ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude as creative collaborators throughout the process. Prompting different models helped us refine our app copy, UX flow, and even uncover blind spots in logic or accessibility.

What's next for FocusTrack

  1. Spotlight Mode: Let managers highlight exceptional work from employees — reinforcing recognition and morale.
  2. Live AI Integration: Replace the mock AIService with real-time AI (e.g., Gemini 2.0 Flash).
  3. Backend Storage: Add Supabase or Firebase to persist user data securely and support collaboration.
  4. Advanced Manager Analytics: Trends, team health reports, and historical performance insights.
  5. Integrations: Connect to Slack, Jira, or Teams for a seamless workflow.
  6. Employee Timeline View: A future feature to help employees see their own streaks, highlights, and impact over time.
  7. Calendar Integration: Automatically sync meetings from Google or Outlook Calendar to streamline the daily plan sidebar.
  8. AI Co-Pilot Expansion: Enable the AI to suggest task durations, time blocks, and productivity patterns throughout the day.
  9. Gamified Streaks & XP: Introduce light gamification to encourage momentum through streaks, task XP, and daily wins.
