Eligibility disclosure

This project was created by Saumya Shrestha, who is under the age of majority. The submission is being made by Upendra Shrestha, their parent, as permitted by the hackathon eligibility rules.

Inspiration

As someone who has struggled with keeping assignments organized and deciding what to prioritize, I understand how easily poor organization can affect academic performance. I also noticed other capable students facing the same problem. They were not performing poorly because they lacked intelligence or motivation, but because they had not yet developed effective organizational skills.

This inspired me to create FocusRoom: a tool that gives students the structure they need to reach their full potential.

What it does

FocusRoom helps students organize their academic lives and study with less stress and more clarity. Students can manage their classes and assignments, record deadlines, assign priorities, and estimate how long each task will take.

The platform recommends which assignments to work on next and allows students to complete them through Pomodoro or custom focus sessions. It also includes reminders, an AI study assistant, study streaks, productivity statistics, weekly progress, and session history.

FocusRoom does not guarantee academic success—students must still remain consistent and put in the work. Instead, it gives them a clear and supportive system that makes staying organized and focused easier.

How we built it

I built FocusRoom independently as a full-stack web application. The frontend was created with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while the backend uses Flask and MongoDB. I implemented secure user accounts, authentication, private user data, assignment and class management, focus timers, email reminders, progress analytics, and an AI-powered study assistant.

I used Codex throughout the development process to help turn my ideas into a functional product, troubleshoot problems, and improve the application. From the design to the backend logic, I was responsible for building every part of FocusRoom.

Challenges we ran into

One of my biggest challenges was managing AI-assisted code changes. Sometimes, when I asked Codex to change one specific element, it also modified unrelated parts of the website that I was already happy with. I then had to spend additional time and credits restoring those parts while preserving the change I originally requested.

This taught me the importance of giving precise instructions, reviewing every change carefully, testing existing features after an update, and making improvements in smaller steps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the entire website. FocusRoom is the first website I have ever built, and seeing it become a professional-looking, fully functional product is incredibly rewarding.

I am especially proud that I created it independently without beginning with advanced coding knowledge. Building features such as secure accounts, assignment tracking, focus sessions, reminders, analytics, and AI assistance showed me how much I could achieve by being persistent and willing to learn.

What we learned

FocusRoom taught me much more than how to create a website. It taught me that when I genuinely commit myself to an idea and continue working through challenges, I am capable of accomplishing things I previously thought were beyond me.

I also learned how to transform a personal problem into a practical product, work with AI as a development tool, identify and correct unexpected issues, and keep improving an idea until it becomes something real.

What's next for FocusRoom

FocusRoom is currently being tested on a friend’s domain. My next step is to publish it on its own official domain and begin introducing it to more students.

After FocusRoom gains some traction and I receive feedback from real users, I plan to improve the platform further and introduce optional premium features through a subscription. My long-term goal is to grow FocusRoom into a dependable study platform that helps more students stay organized, remain consistent, and achieve their full potential.
