Inspiration
Once, when I returned from school, I watched my little brother and I discovered that many students struggle to balance their schoolwork with digital distractions. For students who experience attention difficulties like my brother, getting started with homework can be particularly challenging. That is why I decided to build FocusQuest. This app explores a different approach: instead of simply restricting screen time, it rewards learning with additional leisure time.
What it does
FocusQuest is a french android educational application that allows students to earn screen-time minutes by answering school-related multiple-choice questions.
Students choose their grade and subject, complete short educational missions, and receive two additional minutes for each correct answer.
The app includes a screen-time wallet that combines a daily allowance, earned minutes, and actual usage.
Using Android's usage statistics, FocusQuest can track the time spent on selected applications and subtract it from the available balance.
When their available time runs out, FocusQuest blocks their selected apps until they earn more minutes by answering questions.
How we built it
FocusQuest was developed using: Kotlin, Material 3, Android Studio, Android DataStore, UsageStatsManager, Git, Github and finally OpenAI Codex and Emdash Windows for AI-assisted development
Challenges we ran into
One of the main technical challenges was connecting the educational reward system to real Android application usage while preserving accurate balances and avoiding double counting.
I also focused on creating short, accessible learning sessions with clear feedback and positive reinforcement.
Current functionality
It contains : Educational quizzes organized by grade, subject, and chapter. +30 seconds for each correct answer. Screen-time tracking and automatic deduction. Customizable daily screen-time allowance. Automatic blocking of selected apps when time runs out. Unlocking apps by completing quizzes. Local storage of progress and rewards. The core features have been tested on a real Android phone.
What's next for FocusQuest
I would like to include worldwide school curriculums as well as adaptive question difficulty and improved accessibility
