FocusOS – Where Focus Meets Intelligence
Inspiration
Students today have access to powerful AI tools, but they also face constant distractions from social media, games, and unrelated websites. We wanted to build a solution that not only helps students learn but also helps them stay focused while studying.
What it does
FocusOS is an AI-powered desktop application that creates a distraction-free learning environment.
Students can upload PDFs, PPTs, DOCX files, and images. The application analyzes the content and provides:
- AI-powered summaries
- Key points
- Revision notes
- Important definitions
- Document-based question answering
FocusOS also includes Focus Guard, which helps reduce distractions by restricting selected applications during study sessions.
How we built it
We built FocusOS using:
- Electron
- React
- JavaScript (JSX)
- Node.js
- HTML & CSS
- Tailwind CSS
- Electron IPC
- Gemini API
- PDF Parser
- Mammoth (DOCX)
- JSZip (PPTX)
The application extracts content from uploaded documents, processes it using AI, and presents study-friendly insights through an interactive desktop interface.
Challenges we faced
The biggest challenges were:
- Supporting multiple document formats.
- Integrating AI with Electron.
- Managing communication between the frontend and backend using Electron IPC.
- Building a smooth document analysis pipeline while maintaining good performance.
- Implementing Focus Guard for distraction management.
What we learned
This project helped us gain practical experience in:
- Desktop application development with Electron.
- AI integration.
- Document processing.
- React-based UI development.
- Backend and frontend communication.
- Building and debugging a complete software product under hackathon time constraints.
What's next for FocusOS
Our future roadmap includes:
- Personalized learning recommendations.
- Offline AI support using open-source language models.
- Smarter document retrieval.
- Cloud synchronization.
- Learning analytics and progress tracking.
- Institution-wide deployment for schools and colleges.
