Inspiration
We were inspired by our experiences as students. Many of us, regardless of having ADHD or other neurodivergent traits, experience a lack of focus and time management at times. We are all human. So our team decided to do some research with our goal in mind: to allow anyone to unlock their flow state with psychologically proven study tactics.
What it does
This app essentially provides an environment, with a touch of AI assistance via Intel, for users to stay focused and have more clarity in their planning and time management. Our main features are -- a task view that allows users to see and input tasks, a calendar view that contains tasks broken down into subtasks and digestible chunks for users to work on daily without stress, as well as a focus view to keep the user distraction-free while working on their daily tasks.
How we built it
We used a react frontend, intel and python backend with a flask framework. Our domain is also hosted on GoDaddy. We also used tailwindCSS and html for the UI design as well as figma for our logo.
Challenges we ran into
We had 3 more features we wanted to implement, including connecting the frontend and backend to actually communicate. We also wanted to connect with a MongoDB server for user persistence as well as implement a login feature. We did also run into issues with our UI as three of us had to learn React specifically for this project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Functional web application with 90% features that are demoable. We also have a completed backend which was a major issue we also ran into in figuring out our flask framework and Intel's AI APIs.
What we learned
We learned that dedication and persistence is key when competing in a hackathon. There were many times we discouraged by setbacks and considered just enjoying the hackathon events instead due to time restraints, but our end goal and desire to make a change kept us awake even through the early morning drowsiness and frustrations with our product.
What's next for FocusMe
We hope to enhance our features by connecting the backend which would not only allow users to subdivide their tasks but also implements an AI generation feature that creates suggested subtasks for the user as default. We also hope to improve our UI, and implement our authentication and database feature. Of course, last but not least, we hope this product will bring relief to many users and for us to continue developing it for the greater good and for better accessibility throughout tech and industry.
