Inspiration
Students nowadays take too much stress about their studies and this stress is not just about studying rather they get confused about where to start, how to manage time, what to study next, how to stay consistent, how to revise effectively. To solve these issues we have FocusMap, an AI-powered personalized study navigation and revision system for overwhelmed students.
What it does
-Creating personalized study roadmaps based on exam requirements and personal constraints -Tracking daily study progress and adjusting plans dynamically -Converting study materials into digestible revision resources -Managing adaptive revision schedules based on retention patterns -Monitoring study consistency and receiving intervention alerts
How we built it
We built FocusMap AI as an AI-powered academic navigation system designed to help students overcome study overwhelm and improve consistency.
The frontend was developed using React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS to create a clean, responsive, and distraction-free user experience. We focused heavily on making the interface calming and structured so students could navigate their learning journey easily.
For the backend and authentication system, we used Supabase, which handled user authentication, database storage, protected routes, and real-time progress tracking.
The core intelligence of FocusMap comes from AI-powered roadmap generation and adaptive study planning. Users enter their goals, available study time, strengths, and weak areas, and the system generates a personalized learning roadmap and timetable.
We also integrated an AI-assisted revision workflow where students can upload study materials such as notes and PDFs. The system processes these materials to generate concise summaries, revision content, and quizzes to improve retention and active recall.
To make the platform more personalized, we implemented daily progress tracking and adaptive scheduling. Based on completed tasks and study consistency, the system dynamically adjusts future study plans to reduce overwhelm and improve long-term productivity.
Throughout development, we focused on solving a real but often ignored student problem: not knowing where to start or how to study consistently despite having access to resources.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was designing a system that could generate personalized study roadmaps instead of generic schedules. Every student studies differently, so we had to think carefully about how the AI should prioritize weak topics, available time, and learning pace while still keeping the roadmap realistic and manageable.
Another major challenge was balancing functionality with simplicity. Since students already feel overwhelmed while studying, we wanted the interface to feel calm, intuitive, and distraction-free instead of overcrowded with features.
We also faced backend integration and authentication issues during development, particularly while connecting protected routes and AI-powered backend functions. Debugging API responses, handling edge function errors, and ensuring smooth communication between the frontend and backend required multiple iterations and testing.
Implementing adaptive scheduling was another challenge because the system needed to react dynamically to incomplete tasks, changing productivity levels, and daily progress logs without making the schedule feel too rigid or stressful.
Finally, integrating AI-generated summaries, quizzes, and revision workflows while maintaining fast response times and meaningful outputs required careful prompt design and workflow optimization.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of building a platform that addresses a real and relatable student problem instead of creating just another generic productivity app. FocusMap goes beyond task management by helping students understand where to start, how to stay consistent, and how to revise effectively.
One of our biggest accomplishments was successfully creating a personalized AI-powered study navigation system that can generate adaptive learning roadmaps and structured study plans based on individual goals, weak areas, and available study time.
Another accomplishment was designing a clean, calming, and student-friendly user experience focused on reducing overwhelm rather than increasing pressure. We wanted the app to feel supportive and practical for everyday student life.
What we learned
Learned to use an amazing platform like MeDo. Another valuable lesson was understanding the importance of user experience design. We learned that productivity applications should feel calming, intuitive, and supportive rather than overly complex or stressful. Most importantly, we learned how impactful technology can be when it focuses on everyday problems that people often ignore but struggle with silently.
What's next for FocusMap
We also want to expand the revision system with features such as spaced repetition, smart flashcards, voice-based revision support, and AI-generated practice tests tailored to individual weak areas.
Another future direction is integrating calendar synchronization and productivity analytics so students can better balance academics, extracurricular activities, and personal time without burnout.
