Inspiration

As a student balancing coursework, deadlines, and long-term learning goals, I found that traditional planners helped me organize my work but did little to keep me motivated. Studying can feel like an endless list of tasks with no visible sense of progress.

I wanted to make that progress easier to see and more rewarding. FocusForge grew from that idea: a study companion that combines practical planning with focus sessions, XP, achievements, and streaks.

What it does

FocusForge helps students organize courses and assignments, see upcoming deadlines, and work through focused study and break sessions. Completing study sessions contributes to XP, levels, streaks, and achievement badges, turning consistency into visible progress.

The MVP also includes goals, progress summaries, and light and dark themes. App data is currently stored locally on the device. The premium screen is a demo; real purchases and purchase restoration are not connected yet.

How we built it

We built FocusForge as a cross-platform mobile app with React Native and Expo. Expo Router handles navigation, TypeScript provides typed app code, and NativeWind is used for styling. AsyncStorage persists the user's profile, courses, assignments, goals, settings, and progress on the device.

We used an AI-assisted, iterative workflow to move from product idea and visual design to the timer, planning tools, and gamification features, refining the interface as the pieces came together.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was balancing useful productivity tools with game mechanics without making the app feel distracting. We also had to make a dense set of features work in a phone-first interface, keep state consistent across screens, and make text and controls readable in both themes.

Because this is an MVP, the app currently uses local persistence. Cloud sync, real purchase handling, and a production database still need implementation and testing.

Accomplishments we're proud of

  • Building a working study companion that brings planning, focus sessions, and progress tracking together.
  • Creating a cohesive visual identity and responsive, phone-first interface.
  • Making study activity measurable through XP, levels, streaks, and achievements.
  • Testing the app from a clean GitHub clone and capturing both dark- and light-mode screens.

What we learned

Students often know what they need to do; staying consistent is the hard part. Making effort and progress visible can help turn a large workload into smaller, more motivating steps.

We also learned how important it is to test the whole workflow, not just individual screens: persistence, theme changes, assignment management, and a clean install all affect whether an MVP feels dependable.

What's next

  • Connect real in-app purchases and entitlement restoration.
  • Add optional cross-device sync and a production database.
  • Explore calendar integration and reliable study reminders.
  • Expand analytics and semester planning.

Our goal is to keep FocusForge useful first and motivating second, helping students build study habits that last.
