Inspiration

First-generation, low-income students often juggle numerous responsibilities, including academics, part-time jobs, and family obligations. Managing these tasks can be overwhelming, leading to stress and decreased productivity. FocusFirst is inspired by the need to provide a simple yet effective tool that helps these students organize their lives, prioritize tasks, and stay on track to achieve their goals.

What it does

FocusFirst is a streamlined to-do list app designed specifically for first-generation, low-income students. It offers a user-friendly interface that helps students:

Task Management: Easily create, organize, and prioritize tasks to stay on top of academic, work, and personal responsibilities.

Goal Setting: Set short-term and long-term goals, track progress, and receive reminders to keep students motivated and focused on their objectives.

Time Management: Provides a built-in calendar view and time-blocking features to help students allocate time effectively for studying, work, and relaxation.

Resource Access: Includes links to financial aid resources, career development opportunities, and mental health support, offering quick access to essential information and services.

How we built it

FocusFirst was built using React for its responsive and intuitive user interface, with Redux for state management to ensure smooth task and data handling. We utilized Firebase for real-time data synchronization, allowing students to access their tasks across multiple devices. The app was designed with accessibility in mind, incorporating features like screen reader support and customizable themes.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing simplicity with functionality was a key challenge. We wanted to ensure that the app remained easy to use while providing powerful tools for task management and resource access. Additionally, integrating diverse resources in a cohesive manner required careful design and organization to maintain a seamless user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created an app that truly addresses the needs of first-generation, low-income students. The positive feedback from initial users about its ease of use and effectiveness in organizing their daily tasks has been encouraging. The app’s ability to support students in achieving their goals and managing their responsibilities is a significant accomplishment.

What we learned

We learned the importance of user-centered design and the value of simplicity in enhancing productivity. Engaging with our target audience through surveys and feedback sessions provided valuable insights into their needs and preferences. We also gained a deeper understanding of how technology can be leveraged to support students in overcoming challenges.

What's next for FocusFirst

Moving forward, we plan to expand FocusFirst by adding features like collaborative task management, allowing students to work on group projects with peers. We also aim to integrate personalized notifications and recommendations for resources based on users’ needs. Additionally, we are exploring partnerships with educational institutions to offer FocusFirst as part of student support programs.
