Inspiration

We all know that teenagers, especially Gen Z, use their phones anywhere and everywhere. Teen drivers use phones to text or even scroll while driving and in traffic, statistics from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia show that “In 2019, 39% of high school students reported texting or emailing while driving during the past month.” Even though, iPhone added a feature that questions if you are driving while your phone is in motion, teenagers tend to lie towards it and say no. Teenagers need a real safety feature that detects a phone in their hand through their car camera as a emergency response.

What it does

FocusDrive AI scans your face, detects if you are distracted by your phone in your hand while driving to send you audio alerts to help you focus helping reduce the number of distracted teenage drivers, keeping them away from their phones while driving, helping them save their lives and others caught in danger.

How we built it

FocusDrive AI was built using YOLO AI, Python and OpenCV to detect phones and monitor driver behavior through a camera. When the distraction is detected, the system sends out a audio alert as a warning. With the idea but no steps, ChatGPT gave each step explained, with the steps and code there were still errors I was not familiar with, Copilot fixed those errors and explained how the errors occurred. With no familiarity with YOLO AI and OpenCV, ChatGPT gave multiple ways and explanations including what installments are needed to import onto the project.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was having the AI detect properly without sending false alarms and to fix this issue, adding a timer helped, if more than 3 seconds showed the phone yelled then the alarm would be sent out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud to create a AI detector that can help distracted and continue planning for drowsy drivers, providing a solution to a ongoing problem.

What we learned

I learned how to use YOLO AI, OpenCV and have the UI display to show camera and detections using ChatGPT, first time working with AI using Python was something new to have learned.

What's next for FocusDrive AI

Next step for FocusDrive AI is to add more AI detection features that can help drowsy drivers stay alerted, keep detections accurate and reduce risks of more dangers occurring for drivers.
