FocusBuddy: An AI Learning Assistant for ADHD Students

Inspiration

Millions of middle school students with ADHD and focus challenges struggle to engage with traditional learning methods, especially in complex subjects like biology. Existing tools often fail to provide the necessary structure, interactivity, and emotional support. We created FocusBuddy—an AI-powered assistant designed to help these students stay engaged, learn effectively, and build confidence in their abilities. By integrating interactive learning, task management, and emotional reinforcement, FocusBuddy provides a personalized approach that caters to neurodiverse learners.

What it does

  • Personalized & Adaptive Learning : Adjusts content difficulty dynamically based on student needs.
  • Focus & Task Management : Uses timers, reminders, and structured guidance to maintain engagement.
  • Emotional & Motivational Support : Provides encouragement, stress management, and break reminders.
  • Gamification : Incorporates quizzes, achievements, and illustrations to enhance learning.

How we built it

  • OpenAI API for adaptive learning and interactive responses.
  • Dify AI condition-based prompts to personalize guidance based on student progress.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing structure and flexibility: Too much structure can feel restrictive, while too little can lead to distractions.
  • Tuning AI for ADHD learners: Making responses adaptive without overwhelming students.
  • Hackathon time constraints: Developing and testing core features within a limited timeframe.

What we learned

  • Neurodiverse-friendly UX: Simplifying UI and interaction design significantly improves ADHD student engagement.
