Inspiration
Intense, deep focus is the currency of creation, especially during a high-stakes event like a hackathon. It's a constant battle against burnout, against the urge to abandon a project when things get tough. I built this tool for myself, to combat that feeling. I was inspired by the "grind mindset" of great figures during their early, unglamorous days. I wanted to channel their energy by dueling with them, to feel a sense of solidarity and think, "This struggle is the same one they went through before their breakthrough. My time is now." That question is the spark that ignited FocusVS.
What it does
FocusVS is a web platform that gamifies productivity by turning the isolated act of concentration into a virtual duel against iconic figures. It’s not just another timer; it’s a competitive arena for personal growth.
Choose Your Challenger: Users select an inspirational figure like Elon Musk or Tim Ferriss to compete against. Each challenger has a unique, pre-defined daily routine based on their known work habits.
Real-Time Focus Duel: As you start your focus timer, your progress is tracked and displayed side-by-side with your chosen challenger's simulated progress for that exact time of day.
Visualize the Duel: A dynamic graph visualizes the difference in total focus time. You can see at a glance if you're ahead or behind, fueling your competitive drive.
How I built it
The entire development process was supercharged by Bolt. I started with a clear idea but a fuzzy vision for the UI. Bolt's AI-powered scaffolding and component generation were instrumental. It didn't just write code; it acted as a collaborative design partner.
I built the frontend as a dynamic single-page application using React. By describing features to Bolt, I received fully-styled, functional components that often included UI patterns I hadn't even considered. The backend is powered by Supabase, which provides a robust PostgreSQL database for storing user session data and challenger routines. This iterative process of generating, testing, and refining with Bolt was the key to building a polished application so quickly.
Challenges I ran into
My biggest challenge wasn't technical, but conceptual: how do you visually represent a "duel of focus"? I struggled with creating a dashboard that felt competitive and motivating, not just like two timers next to each other. As a solo developer without a designer, I was stuck.
This is where Bolt became a game-changer. Instead of just giving me code, it provided visual, interactive components. Seeing its suggestions for data visualization, graph (a tug-of-war style progress bar), sparked a creative breakthrough. The tool helped bridge the gap between a vague idea and a concrete implementation, effectively acting as my AI design partner and helping me build a UI that was better than what I had initially imagined.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am incredibly proud of how quickly I was able to turn a complex idea into a demonstrable product. With the help of an AI partner like Bolt, I was able to build a demo-ready version in just about three days. Honestly, I'm amazed. In the past, an idea of this scope would have taken me over a month to build, and it still wouldn't be as polished. It allowed me to bypass the usual bottlenecks of UI design and component boilerplate, letting me focus entirely on the core logic and user experience. It truly felt like I had an AI assistant for the entire development lifecycle.
What I learned
This project taught me how powerful AI-driven development tools like Bolt can be, not just for accelerating coding, but for enhancing creativity. A tool that provides visual and functional components can break creative blocks and suggest better UX paths. It reinforced the idea that as a developer, your primary job is to solve problems, and leveraging the right tools is the most efficient way to do that.
What's next for FocusVS
Native Mobile App: Bringing the competition to iOS and Android for focus sessions on the go.
Expanding the Roster: Adding more challengers from diverse fields like arts, sports, and science to offer a wider range of inspiration.
Advanced Analytics: Providing users with detailed personal dashboards to track their focus patterns over time and compare them against their chosen challenger.
