Inspiration

Social media algorithms have been optimized for maximum retention and have created a cycle of doom scrolling for its users, which impacts productivity and often leaves many feeling anxious. An average person spends about 2.5 hours/day or 900 hours every year (that's more than a month!) just mindless scrolling on social media. What if we can help users to be more mindful, focused and help them get some of this time back by guiding them towards achieving their goals instead.

What it does

  • Focus App helps users to easily set, track and achieve their goals by leveraging AI and create detailed plans, reminders and analytics
  • It helps users to be more mindful with our mindfulness features of guided breathing, meditation and gratitude journal as well as with smart time tracking.
  • Daily Inspirational quote and a challenge to keep users interested
  • The analytics show your progress, due items and time spent on social media vs on your goals
  • Premium features on the mobile app will make the app hands free via voice commands powered by eleven labs. Simply give voice commands or chat and the AI manages everything & guides you.
  • My Long term vision is to add social features so that we finally have a social media that is focused and optimized around user goals. It should not just be about maximizing retention without purpose for users which leads to mindless scrolling

How I built it

  • Did ideation and research using google gemini and built my PRD
  • Then started prototyping and building entirely using bolt.new and took it as far as Bolt allowed in its current state
  • Chose expo as it helps to build both mobile and web apps which was my goal
  • Added integrations with supabase, netlify, gemini, revenuecat (in progress for mobile), elevenlabs (in progress for mobile) and got the domain focus-app.me via entri
  • When I could not fix issues in Bolt I leveraged open ai's codex agent to build the final pieces but 90% of the project has been built on Bolt
  • Still Working on Mobile App, will be leveraging Revenue cat and eleven labs for premium features

Challenges I ran into

  • Initially using Bolt's revert feature and discussion mode worked great
  • But the project kept getting complex and too slow to load. I had to duplicate it 7 times to the point where I could not fix errors and used almost 20 million tokens trying to debug and upgraded to 100 million token plan
  • Then I started using OpenAI codex agent to fix the bugs and that helped me reach from 90% -> 100% of the project's current state

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I have been working as Product Manager for the past several years in Tech but I never imagined even 1 year ago that I could build a working full stack web app all by myself within a month! That's incredible! I can now be the solopreneur I always dreamt about becoming.

What I learned

  • Coding an entire app with AI is the present not the future!
  • People get used to awesomeness too soon. A couple years ago people would have laughed at this idea of building an entire production app using AI vibe coding. Maybe we are still only 90% there but many still focus on the last 10% and forget about how far we have come within a year!

What's next for Focus App

  • Getting 1 million customers!
  • Get User feedback on this Beta version and iterate
  • Building the Mobile app, premium features and social features
  • Ensuring security of the app and user data privacy
  • Make it big and maybe find a co-founder to move even faster!
