Inspiration

We wanted to bridge the gap between physical interactions and digital insights. Often, we leave social encounters wondering how we were perceived if we missed subtle cues. This leads to overthinking both in casual and formal settings. We realized that while people track their steps, sleep, and calories they don't really have a way to quantify their social health. We realized that Meta Glasses are one product that we could take inspiration from. This allows us to capture and track the world exactly as the user sees and hears it. But what about how the user interacts digitally? Messaging, DMs, Facetimes? Thus, we decided to build FocalAI.

What it does

FocalAI uses Meta Glasses and Large Language Models to analyze, track, and quantify real-time conversations and social interactions by tracking conversations, emotional tone, reading facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Its goal is to empower busy adults with total social self-awareness, reducing anxiety and helping them build stronger, more intentional relationships.

How we built it

We first started with picking out main colors, typography, and buttons. We input our vision and ideas into Figma Make as a prompt to create a baseline user interface. From there, we utilized Figma's design and prototyping features to manually iterate on the layout, focusing on the main component which is the summary statistics at the end. We also wanted to make sure that it is not overwhelming for the user to learn to use especially since our targeted audience consists of busy adults.

Challenges we ran into

At first we struggled with the conceptual challenge of understanding the prompt. It certainly was abstract because we had to think about our daily interactions with the world in terms of the nontypical senses. While building our prototype we struggled with adding and organizing the back buttons using the interaction settings.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our effort of creating something from scratch and building on early ideas. Additionally, we’re proud of how we built a tool that is a specific solution that addresses real-world challenges like social anxiety and digital communication gaps, making social self-awareness a trackable reality.

What we learned

We learned that while AI-assisted tools like Figma Make are super useful for rapid prototyping, the real value comes from the handson work/manual iteration and refining the user flow to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for busy users. We also learned a lot about the different extra perception abilities that humans encounter on the daily but we rarely talk about. So it is nice to shed some light on the inner workings of our brain.

What's next for FocalAI

Although this is a great first prototype, we would love to build upon it continuously. We hope to add more to the summary statistics and refine it a bit for live recording such as including facial expression and body language data. Also, we'd love to incorporate a newer design that seems less dull and something more fun to use such as apps like BeReal where you are able to capture the moment in time.
