Inspiration
We learned about how poorly some companies calculate carbon emissions of flights, and how misleading they are about how poor a flight actually is for the environment.
What it does
Site the filters available flights by carbon emissions and gives an exclusive view of flights with a limited amount of emissions using future fight data.
How we built it
We created a express.js API that calls a flight data API and does a carbon emission calculation for each leg of a flight based on the individual plane's carbon emissions per kg traveled and the distance of the segment of the flight. Then we created a frontend react app to call our api and display the data on a pretty bootstrap supported site.
Challenges we ran into
APIs!! We had a hard time finding a good one and then parsing (very poorly documented) endpoint responses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're really excited about our idea. We think it's genuinely a good tool and we see a lot of potential in it.
What's next for Fly Kind
Our carbon emissions calculation could use improvement.
There are some frontend features that would make the site significantly more useful and usable.
Our ultimate vision for Fly Kind would be a fully functional booking site with complete transparency and honesty about flight data and carbon calculations and impact.
