Inspiration
In just a few months, Coronavirus has changed the life of 7 billion people. We all learn to survive in the new world with lockdowns, isolation, and continuous risk for our lives. Being experts working in the sphere of drone autonomy, we are eager to apply our knowledge and technologies to address main challenges and save lives!
FlyCharged technology impacts on 4 challenging points:
- Reduce Virus Spreading
- Social Distancing (when many people are working from home and are not going out)
- Return to 'normal' lifestyle (the transition time to return to normal life and work)
- The new 'normal' (being resilient to future outbreaks)
Our technology is applicable to all VTOL types of commercially available drones. It brings the value to millions of people:
- For Government, Medical authorities, Police, Homeland Security
- For Corporate and Small-Medium Businesses to allow re-open supply chain, goods logistics and recover from the economical crisis caused by the pandemic.
- For Individuals and Communities that have commercially available drones
- Provide their missions continuously 24/7/365 without human involvement
What it does
Started as a part of the UN peacekeeping mission, our team invented a state-of-the-art technology of autonomous drones, capable of being 24/7 up in the air and operating without human involvement. We trust now it is the right time to apply our drone technology to fight COVID addressing challenges.
Autonomous drones are capable of:
- spraying contaminated areas with disinfectants
- refilling drone tanks with disinfectants without human involvement 24/7
- resupply medicine and essential goods within dangerous areas
- without contacting anyone
- without landing
- fully autonomously
- under any weather conditions
- 24/7/365.
Coming to the hackathon in the current situation with the pandemic we concentrated on 3 main applications of our technology:
- contactless remote detection those infected measuring temperature with thermal sensors
- contactless delivery of medicine, blood, COVID samples, essential goods between and within lockdown zones
- contactless disinfection of contaminated areas All of this can be done by drones without landing, autonomously, without human involvement, 24/7 for up to 3 months without mission interruption.
How I built it
We invented and patented own technology of non-landing recharging for drones that enables continuous monitoring in difficult terrain. Now we transfer this technology to the civilian market: we developed a special modernization kit that makes every VTOL drone compatible with our technology.
The technology is compatible with existing drones, we don’t produce drones, we modify existing fleets of them. This saves resources and time for the technology adoption on the market.
- We produce cheap chargers for drones’ batteries and fillers for their tanks, with which drones work without landing.
- We develop software for drones’ modification.
- We produce a modification kit for drones enabling autonomous recharging/refilling.
Our system can provide autonomous continuous monitoring of territories, detection, identification of accidents and reaction to the accidents, disinfection of contaminated areas. The proposed solution is MVP, it demonstrates possible functionality of the system that can be achieved with help of our technology. When working on the MVP several crucial integration were made, which allows partial data exchange between its basic modules.
The proposed system consists of drones with various payloads, like sensors/cameras, backend with AI module, and control center - user interface that allows operators to control and interact with the system remotely. Drones gather data using sensors and send it to the server where the data is analyzed by the AI module to detect potential threats. The result is then formed into actions whether it is monitoring, measuring temperature, supply medicine or disinfection of territories.
The first mission is intended to control virus transmission. Using high-sensitive thermal sensors, drones measure temperature of people from distance of several meters. The collected data is sent to the system core where it is analyzed by the algorithms. The system is capable of continuous accurate measuring temperature of crowds of people from distance of 3-7 meters.
The second mission is aimed at uninterruptible economic processes supporting those in lockdown. We supply medicine and essential goods to those in need. After a request for delivery gets into the system, the system calculates the most optimal route and sends a command to one of drones equipped with special devices. Using QR codes for cargo identification, the drone automatically picks up the cargo, delivers it to the destination and unloads it at a pre-defined point.
The third mission is intended to fight the virus by disinfection of contaminated areas. After request for disinfection is accepted by the system it sends out a drone to the target place. Using machine vision and AI, the drone identifies the area and performs disinfection using appropriate payload. After completion of the work the drone returns to the base.
Thanks to the patented Flycharged technology, the drones don’t land during their operations continuously recharging their batteries and refilling their tanks autonomously, without human involvement. They can also carry cargo of non-standard dimension recharging/refilling with it. This allows to perform a great number of various missions for extended time period and provide stable work in urban terrain performing missions, 24/7 for up to 3 months.
Challenges I ran into
- Creating autonomous flight system requires a lot of efforts of many specialists. Getting drones avoiding obstacles and collisions is the most tricky part that should be addresses further.
- While working as medical devices disinfecting hospitals and special premises drones can be used freely, working outside they are still a subject to strict regulation. However, the pandemic crisis accelerates drones adoption on the market
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
During the hackathon we we have significantly progressed in all three tasks:
- measuring temperature: we started communication with Israel company providing software solution we can use, apart from that we teamed up with an engineer who already has the solution to integrate and we found a specific device which is inexpensive and can be used within 5-8 meters;
- delivery of samples: we teamed up and started integration with an American delivery company Pesoto
- disinfecting streets and premises: we teamed up and successfully integrated with a French company, got AI recognition feature done very fast; during the last hours of the hackathon we got to know with a very strong team from Germany who agree to provide us ultra-light and efficient disinfectants, new meeting has already been arranged.
- Thus, we were able to efficiently integrate a number of solutions into all-in-one, turnkey solutions for contactless emergency/regular delivery, ever detection, and full-cycle cities disinfection.
- We talked to a BMW representative who expressed his interest in our technology!
What I learned
A lot of solutions we need are already in place and a lot of talented teams are ready to cooperate fast and in a very efficient manner. All we need is just to be always in focus and active building new connections at the highest speed to keep up!
What's next for FLYCHARGED
A lot of work ahead! Getting together all the solutions we’ve discovered, communicate with teams we have met and come up with a working product, not MVP. We’re ready to bring the product within 5 months we are serious about starting supplying it as soon as in October 2020 through Europe. We have just tested it during the last 48 hrs.
