We built FLSHPEAID because we know how much the Florida Panhandle gets hit by hurricanes and flooding, and during past storms there was no single place for people to find open shelters, ask for help, or offer supplies — it was all scattered across social media and word of mouth. We built the app in React Native and Expo, starting with a full onboarding flow designed in Figma, then adding a need/offer resource board and an offline-first flood-risk routing feature that uses real road and elevation data so people can find safe routes to shelters even without cell service. Since we were new to coding a few months ago, this project taught us a lot — how to structure a real mobile app, how to pull and process live map data, and how to use git and GitHub to collaborate as a team. The biggest challenges were building the offline routing data without getting rate-limited by the free elevation API we relied on, fixing a crash caused by a missing data file, and learning to keep our code in sync while working across different machines and tools.
