Inspiration
FlowState was born out of a deeply personal journey watching my autistic son navigate a world built for neurotypical workflows. Conventional productivity tools consistently caused harm rather than help: loud alarms violently shattered his deep hyperfocus states, complex setup steps triggered task paralysis, and punitive "streak" counters induced severe guilt and anxiety when his cognitive energy dipped.
I realized that modern productivity tools rely on toxic pressure rather than humane pacing. I set out to build a focus companion engineered specifically for ADHD, Autism, and chronic fatigue—replacing guilt and rigidity with empathy, psychological safety, and clinical energy frameworks.
What it does
FlowState is an assistive focus and digital well-being companion that provides cognitive scaffolding without inducing burnout:
Spoon Theory Energy Calibration: Allows users to set their real-time cognitive energy (High, Moderate, Burnout/Low), dynamically recalibrating daily targets to match their capacity.
Hyperfocus Extension Mode: Seamlessly transitions into overtime when a session ends, ensuring deep flow states are never abruptly broken.
Quick-Start Activation: 1-tap 25-minute focus session removes initial planning friction and executive dysfunction barriers.
Living Garden Meadow & Shame-Free Rest: Replaces anxiety-inducing numeric streaks and fire emojis with a growing botanical ecosystem that never dies or penalizes rest days.
Mindful Friction Intercepts: Gentle Android accessibility intercepts introduce a calming pause before impulse app-switching loops, avoiding punitive lockouts.
Sensory-Friendly Environment: Includes low-stimulus ambient focus soundscapes and a dark-mode palette designed to reduce sensory overload.
How we built it
Core Platform & State: Built natively for Android using a clean architecture pattern with persistent state management to track active sessions across system interrupts.
Background Timer Engine: Implemented reliable Android foreground services and background workers to ensure uninterrupted timing and gentle haptic alerts without battery drainage.
Accessibility Services: Developed custom Android AccessibilityService layers to monitor window state changes and present gentle, non-punitive friction overlays when distracting applications are launched.
Audio & Sensory Pipeline: Integrated an on-device media engine delivering seamless looping soundscapes tailored for focus and sensory regulation.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing Intervention with Autonomy: Building an app blocker that provides meaningful behavioral friction without creating a stressful, panic-inducing lockout for autistic users required multiple iterations of overlay messaging and dismissibility.
Android Background Lifecycle: Ensuring that long hyperfocus extensions and ambient audio engines remained completely stable across aggressive OS battery-optimization kills without drifting or dropping state.
Designing Shame-Free Metrics: Translating standard productivity analytics into a non-linear, supportive gamification model (the Living Garden) required rethinking typical database schemas built around daily streak counters.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built an end-to-end, working solution that directly addresses the real-world lived experience of neurodivergent individuals and chronic fatigue. Successfully turned abstract clinical concepts like Spoon Theory and executive function scaffolding into an intuitive, functional mobile UI. Created a calming, sensory-safe design system that feels supportive rather than demanding.
What we learned Productivity is not one-size-fits-all; executive dysfunction is an energy and friction challenge, not a lack of motivation. Gamification in health applications must be trauma-informed—punitive mechanics like broken streaks actively discourage vulnerable users from returning. Designing with neuroinclusive accessibility principles creates a significantly better, lower-friction experience for every user.
What's next for FlowState - Neuroinclusive Focus & Cognitive Regulation
Bio-Adaptive Audio & Pacing: Integrating wearable sensor inputs (such as heart-rate variability) to automatically detect cognitive fatigue and recommend sensory breaks before burnout occurs.
AI Micro-Task Decomposition: On-device natural language models to automatically break overwhelming tasks into 5-minute actionable micro-steps.
Clinical Pilot Studies: Partnering with occupational therapists and neurodivergent advocacy groups to validate FlowState’s impact on reducing task-initiation anxiety and executive fatigue.
