Problem
Groups regularly get stuck between scattered opinions and unclear next steps. A trip, dinner, shared purchase, or student project can generate many messages but still end without a clear choice or contribution plan.
Target Users
Students, friends, roommates, clubs, and small groups making shared decisions.
Solution
FlowSplit is a browser-first decision workspace that turns a group question into a small decision board. Users create a decision, add options with costs, add contributors, select an option, and lock the final choice. The MVP also calculates an equal contribution amount from the selected option's cost and number of contributors.
Key Features
- Create a decision question
- Add multiple options and optional costs
- Select one option
- Add contributors
- Automatically calculate an equal per-person contribution
- Lock the selected decision into a clear final state
- Runs as a lightweight browser prototype without a required backend
How It Works
- Create a group decision.
- Add candidate options and their costs.
- Add the people sharing the decision.
- Select an option.
- FlowSplit calculates the equal contribution when a cost and contributors exist.
- Lock the decision so the group has one visible outcome.
AI / Technology Usage
The MVP does not claim AI functionality. It focuses on a deterministic product workflow so the core interaction can be demonstrated without hiding basic product behavior behind an AI call.
Technical Implementation
The MVP is implemented as a single browser page using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript. Decision state is held in client-side JavaScript objects. Option selection, contributor entry, equal-share calculation, and decision locking are handled in the browser.
Tech Stack
HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Challenges
The main design challenge was reducing a messy group conversation into a small number of actions without turning the product into a generic chat or task manager. The MVP therefore centers the flow on decision → options → contributors → locked outcome.
Build Process
A focused browser MVP was built for the hackathon around the core decision-and-contribution workflow. The implementation intentionally avoids unnecessary infrastructure so the product behavior is easy to understand and demonstrate.
Judging Criteria Review
Technical Execution — 25%
The MVP implements the complete core flow in the browser: creating a decision, adding options, selecting an option, adding contributors, calculating equal shares, and locking the result.
Innovation & UX — 25%
The product combines decision-making and contribution planning into one short workflow instead of treating them as separate tools. The interface uses a small number of visible actions and a clear final state.
Business & Finance — 25%
A future business model can use a free personal tier and paid group features such as recurring groups, contribution history, shared receipts, and advanced planning. These are future business directions, not implemented features in this MVP.
Communication — 25%
The product is designed around a simple story that can be demonstrated in minutes: a group has a question, creates options, adds people, selects the outcome, and sees the resulting contribution amount.
Impact / Use Cases
FlowSplit can help student groups, friends, roommates, and small communities move from repeated discussion to an explicit decision and a transparent equal-share plan.
Future Improvements
- Real-time multi-user rooms
- Shareable decision links
- Voting and preference weighting
- Receipt and payment tracking
- Unequal contribution rules
- Decision history and reminders
- Authentication and persistent storage
- Optional AI assistance for summarizing discussions and suggesting decision criteria
Demo / Source Code
The current MVP is a browser-local prototype. No public deployment or public source repository is available through the connected tools in this run, so no demo or source-code URL is claimed.
