About Flowly 🌊🌿

Inspiration

Flowly was inspired by a growing awareness of plastic pollution's devastating impact on our environment. Driven by a desire to encourage sustainable habits in daily life, we aimed to make environmental conservation accessible, engaging, and fun. Witnessing firsthand the overwhelming use of single-use plastics motivated us to create an app that could inspire positive change on an individual and community level.

What We Learned

Throughout the project, we discovered the power of gamification to motivate positive behaviors. We learned how crucial user experience and intuitive design are in effectively promoting eco-friendly practices. Additionally, we gained insights into the significance of community building, as users are more likely to adopt sustainable practices when they feel connected to others working towards similar goals.

How We Built It

We developed Flowly using SwiftUI, integrating engaging visuals, animations, and interactive features like dynamic bubble buttons, customizable themes, and progress tracking. The app features include refill logging, daily challenges, social sharing, and environmental impact insights. We used persistent storage and notifications to keep users engaged consistently and responsibly. Incorporating external resources such as sound effects and visual assets also enhanced the app’s immersive experience.

Challenges

One key challenge was designing features that prevented users from cheating to ensure meaningful interactions. Ensuring accurate and meaningful refill tracking required implementing logic to detect and prevent rapid repeated submissions. Additionally, balancing engaging visual design with optimal functionality required careful consideration and iteration. It was also challenging to maintain user engagement over time, which we addressed by adding daily challenges and a rewards system.

Future Plans

Looking forward, we plan to expand Flowly by incorporating more community features, such as user-generated tips and partner with local eco-friendly businesses to offer tangible rewards, further incentivizing users to adopt and maintain sustainable habits. In addition, we also thought about creating the hardware aspect of this; designing a smart water bottle that has its own sensor to accurately determine the number of refills and to prevent cheating. The physical water bottle and the mobile application can be a product that would spread awareness towards less plastic waste.

Overall, Flowly represents our commitment to creating a sustainable future through technology-driven community engagement.
