Inspiration
While applying for internships, I received an email saying I was “shortlisted” for a paid training + internship program. It looked real, but later I found out through Reddit and forums that it was a scam. That moment made me realize: if I, at 21, can almost fall for it… freshers with zero experience definitely will. So I wanted to build something that protects students the way I wished I had been protected then.
What it does
FlowFixer is a quick scam-shield for students. It verifies internship/job emails, checks company details, flags upfront fee scams, and lets students see real peer reviews — all in one click. Instead of guessing whether an offer is real, students instantly get: Safe / Unsafe indicator Red-flag explanations Community-verified reports
How we built it
We designed FlowFixer as a lightweight Chrome extension backed by: Rule-based verification for email authenticity Company registry checks Pattern detection for scam keywords A small community database where students can submit suspicious emails or WhatsApp messages
For the prototype, the focus was on speed, accuracy, and simplicity — a tool that works quietly in the background while students browse job sites or check emails.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing accuracy: Scam messages are written in many formats, so designing rules that don’t give false warnings was tough. Data reliability: Not all job posts are officially listed anywhere. Cross-checking student submissions with trusted sources required careful filtering. UI simplicity: Students are stressed while job hunting — we had to make the extension feel effortless, not technical.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a solution that directly solves a real, personal pain point Designing an MVP that even a non-technical student can use instantly Building a system where students help protect other students through peer feedback Keeping the entire workflow ethical, anonymous, and accessible
What we learned
Internship scams are far more common than we imagine — students often don’t verify anything. Verification tools must be simple and fast; nobody will use something that takes 10 steps. Community-powered data is extremely valuable, but it must be cleaned and validated carefully.
