Inspiration
Building an academic calendar has always been a hassle, and boring to look at so we made an easy to use organizer. We also want to make dreadful deadlines less scary with the addition of a video gaming reward.
What it does
The project is essentially an academic calendar builder that takes any course outline pdf and parses its deadlines and important dates into your own calendar. It weighs any assessment and assigns and importance with color (Darker red weighs more and lighter Green weighs less). To make it a more engaging experience for the user, we added a game that the user can use for motivation to improve on their grades and procrastination. We added currencies to the game including "Scrolls" which can allow the player to buy weapons, armor and "Gems" which buy cosmetics in the game. We also built a chrome extension that takes your grades straight from D2L and rewards your account with an amount gems depending on your grades.
How we built it
We built a web-scraping Chrome extension that collects D2L data, such as grades, submission times, and assignments, and sends it to a backend service. A companion web app then displays the data and helps schedule coursework. We also use grades and submissions as in-game currency for a websocket-based roguelike game called.
Challenges we ran into
- Bad merging of code between members
- Files self-deleting sometimes
- Time constraints ## Accomplishments that we're proud of -Dreaming big and creating working final product -Debugging the mountain of problems we ran into until we find a solution ## What we learned Aiming for a large project within a short amount of time can be very stressful, however very rewarding. ## What's next for Flowestra The biggest room for improvement is undoubtedly in the game. Making a polished game in less then a day is extremely difficult and definitely the most time consuming part of building Flowestra. If we were to continue with the project, we would target providing a complete launchable game.
