Inspiration

Our team has always wanted to make a game with food as the base topic but we never got around to it and always put it on the backburner whenever it came to designing games. We were overjoyed though when one of our team members, Jason Iino, reminded us of this idea. Since the suggestion from him, we became fully committed to creating this game with food in mind. The style of the game though is influenced by the Ludum Dare game MiniCraft, which was created by Notch.

What is our game

This game is about a Rose plant who is on wheels, named Rosy, who goal is to collect a variety of ingredients that are scattered throughout the land that Rosy inhabits. With those collected ingredients, Rosy's goal is to create numerous delectable cuisines that will satiate her unending hunger and to raise her happiness meter. She has to watch out though because the land is riddled with enemies who want to take away Rosy's happiness.

How we built it

The game was made with the Unity Game Engine using C# Scripts. Aesprite was used to make the artwork and sound effects were both originally created (such as with the overworld theme) or copyright free sounds (pickup item, damage notification, etc.).

Challenges we ran into

During the creation of the game, we ran into challenges with the map. Creating a large map was very difficult in Unity as it took a lot of time. The enemy AI was very finicky to get working but after hours of work, we were able to overcome the challenge. When it came to creating the inventory, we had a lot of issues especially with getting it to store objects and items.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall, we would say that we are proud with how the game turned out. We were very proud to successfully create a working inventory and crafting system. We were also very proud with how the gameplay feels and how the map turned out.

What we learned

During the creation of this game, we learned a lot about project management. We realized how hard it was to get things done without a set plan or organized list. After establishing ground rules and what needed to be done, moving forward was a lot more painless. We also had to expand our knowledge with working with Unity.

What's next for Flowery Feast

Next on our list, we would like to expand the map and include more interesting terrains for the player! This will allow for even more unique food dishes. Alongside this, we would like to add dialogue interactions that make the playthrough experience overall more interactive and cohesive
