Inspiration
It all started with Ayaan, a friend of mine who would groan every time he opened his expense spreadsheet. "Why do I need to spend hours filling forms just to know where my money went?" he’d complain. Like many of us, he struggled with manually tracking daily expenses—misplaced receipts, forgotten transactions, endless calculations. Watching him battle with spreadsheets and paper forms gave me a spark: what if managing money could feel as easy as talking to a friend? That’s how FlowCent was born.
The Idea
FlowCent isn’t just another finance app. It’s your AI companion for money management. You don’t type or tap endlessly; you just talk. Tell FlowCent, “I spent $15 on lunch and $5 on coffee,” and within seconds, it knows exactly how to log, categorize, and track your spending. Whether it’s your personal wallet or splitting bills with housemates, FlowCent turns chaos into clarity.
Here’s what makes it special:
- Conversational Expense Logging: Speak naturally, and FlowCent handles the rest.
- Flexible Personal & Shared Tracking: Manage your own spending or share group expenses with friends, family, or roommates.
- Insightful Visuals: Beautiful charts show exactly where your money goes—no tedious budgeting needed.
- Group Splitting Made Simple: See who owes whom at a glance—perfect for trips, bills, or dinners out.
Building FlowCent
I built FlowCent with Compose Multiplatform, creating a smooth cross-platform experience. Firebase Vertex AI powers our conversational AI, and Firestore handles real-time data storage.
However, not everything was straightforward. Enrolling in the Apple Developer Program from Bangladesh was a headache—official support isn’t available here—so even though the app is technically ready for iOS, we’ve only launched on Google Play Store for now.
Challenges Along the Way
Every startup journey has bumps, and ours was no exception:
- Firebase support for Compose Multiplatform isn’t complete, so we often had to find clever workarounds.
- Third-party libraries sometimes clashed, creating unexpected bugs.
- RevenueCat integration was new territory, requiring a steep learning curve.
- The Apple Developer Program enrollment wasted several days, but we didn’t let it stop us.
Despite all this, we shipped a working app with two major features fully functional on Play Store.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully completed two major features and published FlowCent on the Google Play Console.
- Managed to ship a working app despite technical, logistical, and regulatory hurdles.
Lesson Learned
One big lesson: plan your store configurations before building. Jumping straight into development without fully setting up app stores cost us time. Beyond that, we learned resilience—how to deliver under pressure and navigate hurdles without losing sight of our goal.
What's next for Flowcent
- The journey doesn’t stop here. We have some exciting updates planned:
- Three AI financial advisor characters, powered by the MCP protocol, to give personalized guidance.
- One-to-one transactions, and eventually bank and credit card integrations for seamless finance management.
- Continuous updates and bug fixes to make FlowCent smarter and more user-friendly every day.
Managing money shouldn’t feel like a chore. With FlowCent, it finally doesn’t. Just talk, and let your AI handle the rest.
