Inspiration
As university students, we often struggle to balance lectures, tutorials, part-time work, study sessions, personal commitment and other activities. While existing calendar such as Google Calendar and iCal are excellent for scheduling, they rarely help users to make a good schedule or resolve schedule conflicts. We wanted to build a smarter scheduling assistant that saves students time by differentiating between fixed commitments and flexible activities, making weekly planning less stressful and more efficient.
What it does
FlowCalAI is an AI-assisted weekly scheduling application that help users organize their timetable more effectively. Key features including:
- Weekly calendar interface
- Fixed schedules that cannot be moved (e.g classes, meetings, and work)
- Flexible schedules that can be rescheduled (e.g hangout with friends)
- Conflict detection for clashing events
- AI assistant to suggest alternative time slots ## How we built it We built FlowCalAI as a web application using:
- HTML for the application structure
- CSS for responsive and modern styling
- JavaScript for calendar rendering, schedule management, and conflict detection
- Gemini API to generate scheduling suggestions when conflict occur
- Git & GitHub for team collaboration ## Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges is having a clear project outline before building the application. Since FlowCalAI combines scheduling, detecting clash schedules, and AI assistant, it was important to carefully plan the application's workflow, structures, and features before starting to write the code. Spending time at the beginning to design the user flow and deciding how fixed and flexible schedules behave helps us avoid any major redesigns in later stage. Another challenge was integrating AI into the scheduling process. We had to ensure that the AI generates useful and relevant information related to scheduling instead of generating irrelevant suggestions. Finally, creating a simple and intuitive user interface requires several iterations. We wanted the calendar to display schedules clearly and support the features we added, while remains simple for the users to use the app without feeling overwhelmed. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud that we were able to built a fully working application within the time given. Despite the limited time given, we successfully transformed our idea into a working prototype. We are also proud of how well we collaborated as a team. We divided the tasks, communicate regularly, and helping each other throughout the project. By working together, we were able to overcome challenges and complete an application that we are proud of. ## What we learned Throughout this hackathon, we learned that:
- Design user-centered solutions by focusing on real-world problems
- Integrate AI into a web application to enhance user experience
- Improve frontend and backend development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Team collaboration using GitHub
- Balancing functionality with simplicity when designing user interface ## What's next for FlowCalAI We believe FlowCalAI has the potential to become a better AI-powered personal scheduling assistant. Some future improvements include:
- Google Calendar and iCal integration
- Collaborative scheduling for group projects and meetings
- Weekly productivity analysis
- Mobile applications for Android and iOS.
- Learning users' scheduling habits to provide a more personalized recommendations
