Inspiration
Administration at UNC-CH is aiming for every student to take at least one personal finance class during their time here, however, assignments and projects fail to capture interest. As college students navigating the complexities of personal finance, we recognize the need for a tool that not only keeps us on track but also empowers us to build a strong financial foundation in an engaging way.
What it does
Flourish is a comprehensive app designed to empower users with financial education while promoting healthy, trackable financial habits. Through engaging in lessons and reaching milestones in various categories, users can grow their virtual gardens as a reflection of their financial progress. The app offers a basic, holistic template to serve as a strong foundation while allowing users to customize their financial journey to their unique goals and interests. Flourish fosters connection by enabling users to explore friends’ gardens, join communities with like-minded individuals, and draw inspiration from others' progress. With endless opportunities for expansion, flourish is here to help you grow!
How we built it
We used SwiftUI to build the iOS mobile application and display basic functionality, and Figma for conveying our UI/UX vision and additional capabilities. We used JavaScript, HTML and CSS to create the website to support our application.
Challenges we ran into
In the ideation phase, we planned to have hundreds of features and capabilities. While we were aiming for a holistic solution, we realized that a smooth user experience is more important and that simplicity can translate better to usability. We greatly simplified our app in order to provide a better user experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Unlike most tools that simply compile resources, we developed Flourish to incentivize tangible action while fostering collaboration and inspiration. One of our proudest achievements is designing the app with limitless possibilities for future expansion. From the beginning, we prioritized features that encourage partnerships with established companies in banking and entrepreneurship, such as Etsy, to translate knowledge to action. We’re proud to create a platform that not only educates but also connects individuals with tools for financial success.
What we learned
Although none of us are experts in any certain tool, we combined our basic experiences in various languages and softwares to bring our app to life. We learned the importance of our diverse skills and perspectives and were able to teach each other a little bit along the way.
What's next for Flourish
We will target more users by allowing organizations to register both track their finances, and garner community support through donations. Various flowers corresponding to different categories of spending — fundraising, campus events, merch, etc — will provide a visual for users that will encourage transparency and responsibility from organizations while increasing communal support for young or struggling organizations.
