Inspiration
We were inspired by how flowers seemed to attract many different kinds of things in nature, ranging from bugs to bees to butterflies. However, the flower gets in trouble if it accepts the wrong kind of attraction
What it does
All the bugs in the garden are attracted to you! control a flower with your left and right keys to dodge bugs that take away hearts, while catching butterflies and bees to earn you points. You will probably need to go offscreen at times so you can easily time catching the right type of bug.
How we built it
We first started with a base tutorial on how to create a game on Godot and learnt all the different elements Godot has. Then we searched up tutorials for different parts of the game, i.e. adding background music, making the bugs and butterflies fly into the scene from random spots at random times, etc. As we went through creating the game individually, we also helped each other with debugging the code as well as debugging the conflicts while using the shared github repository. We made the art using pixilart and music using garageband
Challenges we ran into
Quickly learning to use Godot, dealing with our different timezones, trouble with shared github repositories, bugs in the code that were very hard to debug.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to quickly adapt our project when we realized that we couldn’t make something more complicated before the deadline. Abishag, one of our team members, made the background music and all the other music used in this game on Garageband!! Nishka, another member, made all the art that you see in the game, including the bugs, butterflies, background for all pages and the buttons. Abishag also helped by making some rough drawings which Nishka made into the final sketches. Every single asset used in the game was made by the team members and we are really proud of it!
What we learned
We learned that we had to manage our time more carefully from the beginning We learned to code an entire game in Godot. We learned to overcome our time zone difficulty by distributing different parts of the game to each person in the group so that we don’t overlap.
What's next for Floral Defense
There would probably be an update of the game, since this is all of our first time using godot, it's a beginner game, for the future, we could probably update to make it better. One thing we could do is adding an option to purchase upgrades though pollen. For example, when players collect 30 pollen, they can use this to unlock new abilities or power ups. We could also add level changes and different types of insects. We also plan to add more flowers for every 5 butterflies that pollinate the flowers. And we might also add more variation to the butterflies and also introduce different insects with different abilities.
