Inspiration
We started with a fun idea of "plant tinder," which evolved into a concept resembling Pokémon Go for plants—a way to track and catalog plant discoveries.
What it does
FloraDex provides a catalog of plants (currently featuring species from Missouri), and allows users to select a plant, capture a photo, and log each species they find, as well as viewing discoveries by other members of the community.
How we built it
We used the React Native environment to build and test the app for our project.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was developing a live social feed that could update whenever a user logged a new plant discovery. This required an external database and real-time syncing, which we couldn't fully implement within our time limit.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our clear vision and roadmap, which helped us stay focused, and prevented overshooting our goals. Despite time constraints, we made significant progress and developed a functional app, with plenty of room for improvement/expansion.
What we learned
We gained valuable experience in mobile development with React Native and learned to navigate collaborative workflows with Git, a first for a majority of our members.
What's next for FloraDex
Our top priority is to implement a live social feed with real-time updates through an external database. Future enhancements include Google Maps integration and automated plant identification through photo analysis, making FloraDex even more user-friendly.
