Inspiration

Wanted to help foster a deeper connection between individuals and the native beauty of their local ecosystems.

What it does

Enables users to search for and discover the unique flora of their region.

How we built it

Used NatureServe Explorer REST API to gather information on native plants by state. Then created a fully functional and interactive website using React so that users could easily search for this information.

Challenges we ran into

Issues finding APIs that had the data necessary for the project. Currently still searching for better APIs so that more information regarding each plant can be displayed. Additionally, there is currently an issue with the advanced search feature so that is down.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was my first time building a website and using APIs so I'm proud to have built out a project this large.

What we learned

Learned how to use react and query data from APIs.

What's next for Flora Finder

Gather more information on native plants to display to users. Additionally, we would like to hone in the search to focus on a more specific region, such as the Charlottesville area, instead of by just state.
