Inspiration
Many people love to hang out with arcade or escape room games that provide an immersive, engaging, and social experience. However, such games tend to be expensive and far away from other people. We created the Floor is Lava Treasure Hunt for so that people can enjoy such an experience for free without having to travel far away.
What it does
The Floor is Lava Treasure Hunt is an XR version of the floor is lava game. Players physicaly dodge parts of the floor with lava as the game makes various parts of the floor disappear. While avoiding lava, players also dodge threatening enemies while collecting treasures along the way.
How we built it
We built the game with Unity, and we use Meta XR and Open XR to make it playable on the Meta Quest. For tasks involving more specific control of behavior, we used C# for scripting. Furthermore, members of the team are divided into design and development roles, and we eventually combined our parts at the end of the project.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into is getting the enemies to emerge from the lava while also following the player. We looked for Unity features that can accomplish this task, but no such feature was present. Therefore, we decided to learn some C# and implement the feature with scripting, so we can have specific control of the movement of the enemies.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have learned how to design applications for XR, a cutting-edge technology that provides game-changing virtual experiences. We are also proud of being able to create a very engaging game we would rather enjoy with our own friends.
What we learned
We learned how to develop XR applications in Unity for Meta Quest. Furthermore, we also learned C# and how it can be applied to the development of Unity games. Teammates who designed parts of the game also learned game design skills that allow them to create very engaging experiences for players.
What's next for 1511-SF09 Lava Legends
In the future, we would like to expand the game so that it can be played by more areas across a larger area. Furthermore, we would also like to include a leaderboard recognizing players who are able to survive the longest while also collecting the most treasures.
