Inspiration
The childhood game of pretending the floor is lava but with a twist. The game comes to life in a much bigger way than just jumping on furniture in your parents' home. Just to be able to play in an immersive experience that captivates that fun was always the goal. Our Team drew inspiration from Cave Survivor - made by Poppa_Hoppa and melded it with the wonderful children’s game we all know and love.
What it does
This world is a survival game, you and your friends battle it out amongst moving pillars and rising lava to be the last one standing.
How we built it
The world was created by utilizing blender for the design layout, codeblock scripting, and specifically chosen sound and visual effects to make the whole world come to life. Poppa_Hoppa came up with the idea for the build as well as worked on the game’s performance and functionality as well as having input in the design layout and implementing the visual and sound effects. Magethe4th created the map layout and skybox, using blender and created the mini-map.
Challenges we ran into
We were challenged constantly with bug issues and reworking scripts and changing small aspects. Everything can be a challenge, but we were able to work through it by finding ways to work around it. Retexturing, changing lighting, and effects to provide a more immersive experience had come with a lot of nitpicking, but we truly think we worked out a way to provide just that to the Horizon community we have been so lucky to be a part of for the last few years.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most pleased with our layout. We worked together for the appropriate dimensions and placement of each and every placed asset. The height and width of the overall world to provide the feeling of being in a volcano while also allowing for optimal gameplay of a lobby of up to 15 players.
What we learned
We learned how to optimize more for better visuals in a way we wouldn’t have if it weren’t for trying to design a world suited for mobile, while being playable on VR as well.
What's next for Floor is Lava
We have already talked about new levels and in-world-purchasable items we would like to implement. We want to also add a mini-game for the lobby, so no matter what people who join will be able to be occupied, if they aren’t wanting to be social. We would’ve loved to add more design elements to add some more flare and give better visual characteristics.
