Inspiration
The idea for FloodWatch came from witnessing the devastating floods that hit Bayelsa and Kogi States in 2022. Families lost everything, homes, farmlands, even loved ones. What struck me was how sudden it all happened. Many never received a warning. That pain and helplessness inspired us to build something that could predict and prevent such tragedies.
What it does
FloodWatch uses AI and real-time weather data to predict possible floods and alert users instantly via web and WhatsApp. It empowers communities with early warnings and safety information, promoting environmental awareness and disaster readiness.
How we built it
We used a combination of machine learning models, real-time APIs, and geospatial data to detect flood-prone patterns. Our backend integrates with WhatsApp’s API and a responsive web interface to ensure accessibility even for remote areas.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating accurate environmental datasets and weather APIs.
Ensuring alerts reached rural communities with poor internet access.
Building a model that balances accuracy and speed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned that innovation becomes powerful when it’s human-centered. We realized that technology can do more than connect people—it can protect them. FloodWatch taught us empathy, teamwork, and the importance of accessible, sustainable tech for Africa.

What's next for Floodwatch
FloodWatch is ready to move beyond prototype into large-scale impact. Our next focus is on strategic partnerships and adoption. We plan to:
Collaborate with NGOs, environmental agencies, and emergency response units to deploy FloodWatch in vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
Launch awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the importance of early flood warnings and how to access alerts through our web and WhatsApp platforms.
Refine our AI model with more localized data for higher prediction accuracy and scalability across African regions.
Expand access through government and private-sector collaborations, making FloodWatch a reliable disaster-prevention tool nationwide.
Our vision is to make FloodWatch a trusted environmental safety solution, reducing disaster impact, saving lives, and positioning technology as a force for resilience in Africa.
