Inspiration

Growing up in Kolkata, we have seen how monsoon flooding affects everyday life. A road that is safe in the morning can become dangerous within hours due to waterlogging, hidden potholes, or open drains. We realized that while people often have the information, it remains scattered. This inspired us to explore whether communities themselves could help each other by sharing real-time updates and creating a safer environment during heavy rains.

What it does

FloodSafe is a community-powered flood accessibility system. It enables people to report flooding conditions, road hazards, and accessibility issues in real time. These reports are organized and mapped to provide location-specific information that can help others avoid unsafe routes and make better travel decisions. Over time, the data can reveal recurring flood hotspots and strengthen climate resilience,in future,It can become a Database with records to build preparedness and content for quality research.

How we built it

Instead of starting with complex technology, we focused on solving the problem with simple and accessible tools. We used digital forms for collecting reports, spreadsheets for organizing information, and mapping tools to visualize affected areas. Our approach was to first build a reliable information flow and then gradually add more advanced features as the system evolves.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was balancing ambition with practicality. Initially, we thought about building large platforms and many features, but we soon realized that creating something useful matters more than creating something complicated. Another challenge was ensuring that the project would remain valuable beyond competitions and continue serving communities over time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What makes us proud is not just the idea itself, but the shift in our thinking. We moved beyond creating awareness and focused on building something people could actually use. We transformed scattered local observations into a framework that has the potential to become a long-term source of flood intelligence and community resilience.

What we learned

This journey taught us that innovation is not always about inventing something completely new. Sometimes it is about connecting people, information, and technology in meaningful ways. We learned that simple solutions, when designed thoughtfully, can have a lasting impact. Most importantly, we learned that solving real problems requires listening, adapting, and staying grounded.

What's next for FloodSafe

Our immediate goal is to test FloodSafe during the monsoon season and understand how communities interact with the system. In the future, we hope to expand beyond manual reporting by introducing live alerts, smarter verification, predictive analytics, and a richer flood intelligence platform.

We envision FloodSafe growing into a scalable climate resilience system that can support safer and more prepared communities across flood-prone regions.
